Q. How many basic/ normal types of operating systems are?

  

All operating systems can be classified into two categories. 

1. CUI ( Character User Interface & Command User Interface )
2. GUI ( Graphical User Interface )

1. CUI:- 

         ( Character User Interface & Command User Interface )

       The CUI operating system is a text-based operating system, Which is used for interacting with the software or files by typing commands to performs specific tasks. the command line operating system uses only the keyboard to enter commands. The command-line operating systems include DOS and UNIX. The advanced command-line operating system is faster than the advanced GUI operating system. 

There are different operating systems providing character user interface are MS-DOS, & Unix, etc. 

2. GUI:-

      (  Graphical User Interface )

         The graphical user interface operating system is a mouse-based operating system ( Ex - windows, Linux, or Mac os) where is a user performs the tasks or operations without typing the commands from the keyboard. the files or icons can be opened or closed by clicking them with a mouse button. 

In addition to this, the mouse and keyboard are used to control the GUI operating system for several purposes. Most of the embedded-based projects are developed on this operating system. the advanced GUI operating system is slower than the command line operating system.

Macintosh:- There is more GUI interface providing systems are Windows, & Linux, etc.

All OS can be classified into how many categories?

All operating systems can be classified into four categories.

1.Single User Operating system

2.Multiuser operating system

3.Single Tasking Operating system

4.Multitasking Operating system. 

Single user operating system

            The operating system which allows only one user to work on a computer at a time is known as a single-user operating system. 

Examples include - DOS, Windows XP, etc. 

Multiuser operating system

            A Multiuser operating system allows a number of users to work together on a single computer. each user will be provided a terminal connected to a single computer. 

Examples include -Linux, UNIX, Windows 2000, etc.

Single Tasking operating system

            The operating system which can execute only a single job/program at a time is knowns as the single-tasking operating system, e.g MS-DOS.

Multitasking operating system

            A multitasking operating system supports the execution of more than one job at a time. Most of today's operating systems, such as Windows NT, UNIX, and Linux, etc. supports multitasking.
