Generations of operating system 

    The operating system, like computer hardware, has undergone a series of revolutionary changes called generations. In computer hardware, generations have been marked by major advances in componentry from vacuum tubes ( first generation), to transistors ( second generation ), to integrated circuitry ( third generation ), to large-scale and very large-scale integrated circuitry ( fourth generation). the successive hardware generations have each been accompanied by dramatic reductions in costs, size heat emission, and energy consumption, and by dramatic increases in speed and storage capacity.

Q. How many types of Generation of the operating system.   

-) Five types of Generation of the operating system. 

1. The zero-generation of the operating systems. (1940)
    Or, 0th Generation of operating system 

     The zero generation of the operating system was introduced for controlling the " Charles Babbage ". It was developed in 1940. programs were written in MACHINE LANGUAGE. This generation of the operating system was known as Open Shop. Where only the programming is responsible to be introduced with hardware to achieve execution of the request. 

2. The first-generation of operating systems.

     Or, 1st Generation of operating systems. ( 1951 - 1956 ) 

      The first-generation marked beginning of commercial computing.Vacuum tube used as active component technology. This generation of the operating systems knows as Close shop. 

       Application programs were run one at a time.

        MONO programmed OS developed - consisted Kernal in main storage, job scheduler, and a number of utility programs kept in secondary storage. 

       Assembly language and procedure-oriented language such as FORTRAN were developed.

        CPU waited as relatively slower mechanical I/O devices were reading/ writing program data.  

3. The second-generation of operating systems. ( 1956 - 1964 )

     In the second-generation of the operating systems. we are introduced to The Mono programming operating system. Where the user may place only the request to execute & never be alleged another request this the previous request is executed completely. 

4. The Third-generation of operating systems. (1964 - 1979 )

     In this generation of operating systems. we are introduced to Beach processing. There the user may place multiple requests to execute. where a similar type of request introduces a batch & a system may behave multiple batches. There the executed to only the batch is possible. 

5. The Forth-generation of operating systems. ( 1979 - Present )
  Or, Multi-programming operating systems. 

     This generation of operating system introduces multi-program processing. There a system becomes capable to achieve the execution of multiple programs simultaneously. There it is possible through the prototyping of the process management utilized in the execution of multiple requests with the purposes of max CPU utilized.
