Basics of popular operating systems introduction

  • Linux operating systems

Overviews of Linux:- Linux is one of the multiuser & multitasking operating systems. which has been developed by Linus Benedict Torvalds. Linux is a 32-bit operating system. it runs on a wide variety of platforms, such as Intel, Sparc, Alpha, etc. it can be considered in every sense as a full-blown implementation of UNIX. Linux is distributed as a free ( Open source ) system software under a free software license called the GNU General Public Licence ( GNU/ GPL).

Advantages of Linux over windows:-

        Linux operating system are:-
  1.           Low cost:-  The majority of Linux variants are available for free at a much lower price than Microsoft windows.

    2.    Stability:- Linux does not need to be rebooted periodically to maintain performance levels. It does not freeze up or slow down over time due to memory leaks.

    3.    Performance:- Linux provides persistent high performance on workstations and on networks. It can handle unusually large numbers of users simultaneously.

    4.    Network Friendliness:-  Linux was developed by a group of programmers over the internet and has therefore strongly support the network functionality. The client had a server system that can be easily set up on any computer running Linux. It can perform tasks, such as network backups faster and more reliably than alternative systems.

    5.    Flexibility:- Linux can be used for high-performance server application desktop applications and embedded systems. You can save disk space by installing the components needed for a particular use.

    6.    Compatibility:- It runes all common UNIX software packs. Ages and can process all common file formats.

    7.    Fast and easy installation:- Most Linux distributions come with user-friendly installation and setup program. Popular Linux distributions come with tools that make installation of additional software very user friendly as well.

    8.    Full use of hard disk:- Linux continues to work well even when the hard disk is almost full.

    9.    Multitasking:- Linux is designed to do many things at the same time e.g a large printing job in the background would not slow down other work.

    Disadvantages of Linux over Windows

    1.    Linux has more than three hundred versions and all versions can not be installed on a single computer system.

    2.    There are so many distributions of Linux that new users may get confused.

    3.    Some hardware devices and software may not be compatible with a particular version of Linux.

  • Windows operating systems

  • Mac ( Macintosh) operating system
The macintosh os was developed by Apple inc.  It is the first GUI interface introducing OS that was multiuser & multitasking operating system requires a special hardware configuration to achieve the interaction of the user with hardware for the execution of the task. It is too expensive by which it was not used widely in masked.
  • Dos ( MS-Dos ) operating system
It stands for Disk Operating System. while was easier known as Dirty Operating System and developed by IBM. later the modification is done in the Dirty Operating System. Which was known as Q-DOS, stands for quick and  Dirty Operating system.
